Have High Energy Bills in MA? Here’s How to Lower Them

Your energy rates in Massachusetts are going up. In a new report from the Retail Energy Advancement League, the organization reported that “ As of Friday, Aug. 1, electric utility rates will be rising when it comes to the Eversource and National Grid power companies, among others.” REAL attributed the rise to increased air conditioning usage throughout the remaining weeks of summer.

Last year, Massachusetts residents paid some of the highest energy rates (29.94 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in the country. (In July 2025, the national average for energy rates was 17.47 cents per kWh. For many families in the state, setting aside money every month for their utility bills is often a struggle. As reported by the Globe, “the median low-income energy burden is 13.7 percent of their incomes; one in four homes devotes nearly 23 percent of their income to those bills, the report’s authors found.”

At MRW Mechanical, we’re dedicated to helping Massachusetts residents lower their bills with our HVAC services. Below, we’ve put together a guide on how you can start saving money on your home’s energy today.

Why Are Energy Rates So Expensive in Massachusetts?

As the Globe wrote in 2024, “Energy bills have historically been high in the city and state because Massachusetts sits near the end of natural gas pipelines, and is beholden to fuels from outside the state, namely oil and gas, and both are known for being vulnerable to price spikes.”

How Can I Lower My Utility Bills in Massachusetts?

While Massachusetts already has a high standard energy rate, your utility bills may be higher than normal because of your home’s building materials. If your home hasn’t been insulated in awhile, or didn’t receive proper insulation, this can potentially lead to leaks and gaps, which can cause your home’s HVAC system to work harder.

If your home has recently been insulated, or analyzed for an annual checkup, then you can put the blame on your HVAC system. A poorly-functioning HVAC system could have system leaks, damaged ductwork, or even old parts, all of which can cause high utility costs. At MRW, we can take a look at your HVAC system and see what needs to be done. From Installations to Emergency Repair Services, our team is ready to help, 24/7.
