Heating your home in Massachusetts can get expensive. In 2024, Massachusetts residents paid some of the highest energy rates in the nation, falling behind New York and Hawaii. This year, energy rates are set to rise again, with Eversource eyeing a “13%” increase (per WVCB).
Want to heat your home this winter without raising your utility bill? At MRW Mechanical, our team created a guide on the top, cost-effective ways you can heat your home this winter. (Hint: none of them involve having to turn on your heater.) Read more below!
Hot Water Bottles
Hot water bottles aren’t only good for when you’re sick; you can also use them as a thrifty way to heat up your room. We recommend grabbing a few hot water bottles and keeping them beside you as you migrate between different rooms in your home.
One thing to note here: be sure not to heat your hot water bottle for too long; the average bottle can reach up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
Keep The Door Open While You Shower
By keeping your bathroom door open while you shower, this will allow the humidity to transfer to the next room, improving your home’s heat. You can also use your bathroom as a “steam room” during the winter by showering on a high heat and leaving your bathroom door closed.
Run Your Ceiling Fan in Reverse
As we wrote in our blog last month, running your ceiling fan in reverse can actually make your home warmer. We recommend putting your ceiling fan’s motor in reverse, allowing it to rotate clockwise. By reversing it, this will generate a stream of warm air in the desired room.
Get Your Heater Inspected
If none of the recommendations above worked out for you, maybe it’s time to have your heater looked at. Can you recall the last time you’ve had your heating system looked at? Chances are, your system might be improperly functioning, causing you to spend more on utility bills each month.
A faulty heater can cause your system to work harder, contributing to higher costs and slightly heated rooms. With MRW Mechanical, our team can inspect your heater to make sure it’s working right before the brisk season ahead. If your system isn’t, working right we can help you get a same-day repair, or an upgrade if you’re ready to say goodbye.
